Christmas Time is Here, New Electronics Everywhere

Yellow Christmas Present Merry Christmas! We wish you all the merriment and cheer this season! This time of year is a time for giving; whether that mean giving our time with family and friends, or the exchanging of presents to promote a sense of cheer and joy. In this day and age, many of the presents we receive have some sort of electrical components attached to it. With technology seeming to change by the minute, this also means receiving a new model of a previous design. From phones to computers to even toys, so much of our daily live are electronic. But this season, instead of letting last year’s model collect dust in the closet, bring it to Direct Metals Recycling, located in Atlanta, Ga, and trade it in for some extra cash!

Why Recycle Electronics With Direct Metals Recycling?

  • Help the Environment – Much of the electronic waste we produce ends up in our city’s landfills, but these items contain mercury and other toxic materials that can be harmful to the environment. Recycling things like old phones can help reduce the amount of toxins contaminating our water and land, and also reduces the need to strip the earth of more precious metals.
  • Make Some Cash – As we stated before, this a great way to clean out that closet and make a little extra cash! Many of us are faced with sparse wallets and purses this season and a little extra money is welcomed.
  • Secure from Identity Theft – You see it as trash, but someone else might see it as treasure. Discarded electronics is a prime source of identity theft for those seeking to do so. When you recycle you recycle with us, we take steps to ensure each item is wiped clean to prevent any such issues.

Not all metals are created equal. In fact, many of the metals that you will find while scrapping will have varying prices attached to it.

  • Some of the less valuable metals will be materials like iron and tin.
  • Midlevel metals will be aluminum, lead and zinc.
  • The metals that are going to bring the most, but are also a bit more difficult to find, will be materials like nickel, copper, cobalt, tungsten and chromium.

So when you are out and about in search of metals to recycle, keep these things in mind while sifting through an area.

Why Recycling Scrap Metal is Great for the Environment

Globe

Recycling is one of those things that just makes you feel good, and every small contribution helps. When you recycle materials like plastic and paper, knowing that your individual effort is part of a much bigger picture is great motivation. So, why do we recycle? Recycling is an effort to reuse materials that would have previously found their way to ever-expanding landfills. Repurposing materials, like paper, mitigates issues of waste and natural resource consumption. The more paper we reuse, the less trees need to be cut down. Here at Direct Metals Recycling we aren’t in the business of recycling paper, but we are in the business of recycling something a little heavier. Metal. We know why we recycle paper, but why metal?

There is a lot of scrap metal out there. In fact, the scrap metal industry turns more than 130 metric tons of seemingly unusable materials back into useful raw materials annually. From the rotors you just swapped out on your car to old copper piping, scrap metal comes from far and wide. So, other than making a few extra bucks, what are the benefits of scrap metal recycling? Many! Without the repurposing of these metals, a more mining would need to take place and therefore a greater usage of virgin natural resources. Since metals are a nonrenewable resource, recycling couldn’t be more imperative.

Not only does scrap metal recycling aid the issue of an nonrenewable resource, but helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well. It isn’t an obvious correlation, but when we reuse “obsolete” metals the amount of energy expended to manufacture the products is greatly reduced. When you recycle metal, you’re helping the environment!

Is Your Cell Phone as Good as Gold?

Did you know that your old cell phone is recyclable? Most cell phone companies and programs will only pay for newer phones in high demand that can be refurbished and resold or, if you’re lucky and have a popular phone, you might be able to get a couple dollars for it on an online auction site if someone is looking for replacement parts. By the time you find a buyer, package and ship the phone, it has cost you more time and money than you’re getting in return.recycle cell phones

What most people don’t know is that there’s real value in electronics recycling, especially in older devices, even if they are broken and unrepairable. Devices that are outdated cannot be repaired and have no direct value to consumers looking for a cheap replacement. Cell phones and other electronic devices contain valuable scrap metalplatinum, silver, lithium ion, gold – and it takes approximately four cell phones to produce one pound of scrap. Collecting enough to turn in for a profit takes some time and creative digging but can definitely pay off.

Recycling cell phones may not make you rich overnight, but the cash adds up over time. Cell phone batteries have a separate value so it’s recommended that you remove the batteries and cash them in separately. In addition to earning a few extra dollars, electronics recycling keeps these items out of the landfills, ditches and other common dump sites.
