Amplats Miners Still On Close Watch

A lot has happened surrounding the Amplats platinum miner strike we filled you in on last month but tension still reigns supreme as strikers and Amplats representatives negotiate wages.

Hundreds of striking Amplats (Anglo American Platinum) workers sang and danced as they rallied at Rustenburg’s Olympia Park Stadium this morning. Workers spoke openly about returning to work if given a satisfying pay increase, many stating that they would begin working as soon as their demands are met.

After denying the re-instatement offer made by Amplats during initial negotiations, workers are hoping to see something much more appealing than the minimum they were once offered after strikes began back in September.

Amplats chief executive Chris Griffith assures journalists that the company has gone to great lengths to see these workers return to work, but there is only so much Amplats can do before it falls into other hands. Amplats’ latest wage increase offer has been laid out on the table and must be accepted by Monday, November 12. If employees do not return to work by that day, the offer will lapse and Amplats would have no option but to continue with their mass dismissal.
