America Recycles Day

November 15th is America Recycles Day! A program of Keep America Beautiful, America Recycles Day is nationally recognized and dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. Today, there are many events around the Atlanta, Georgia area promoting recycling in your community. If you are part of the Direct Metals Recycling community and a scrap metal recycler, you do your part of recycling every day.

Light BulbUnique Recycling Programs

Most people know about the commonly recycled products such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal. Recycling these products reduces stress on the environment by limiting the use of natural resources and stops waste from making its way into landfills and polluting the earth. In addition to these well known recyclable materials, there are many other types of recycling programs that you can take part in.

  • Eye Glass Collection – The Lions Club collects gently used prescription eye glasses
  • Cell Phone Recycling – If you have a used cell phone that is still is working order, you can donate it to one of several charities that sends them to troops overseas so they can connect with their families, or those that are less fortunate so that they will have access to 911 emergency response services.
  • Compact Fluorescent Bulbs – CFLs contain mercury which is released when they end up in a landfill. Instead, take them to IDEA or Home Depot for recycling.

Always remember that anything you can do to reuse a product reduces pollution, the volume of waste in landfills, and the stress of mining raw materials from the earth. So, scrappers, keep up the good work of recycling and educate everyone you can about its benefits for you and I, and future generations!
