Alternators – To Scrap or Not to Scrap?

AlternatorCar parts are an easy and valuable source to find non-ferrous metal for recycling at our Atlanta, Ga location. The question for each part comes down to – do I strip this part, or not? The answer depends on which part you are considering. Aluminum radiators, for example, will get the highest price when their plastic housing has been removed. Today, Direct Metals Recycling is going to talk about the options you have when recycling alternators or starters.

Alternators and starters are valuable for scrap metal recycling because they contain copper wire, steel, and aluminum. Here are Direct Metals, we find the copper and aluminum to be most valuable. Many inexperienced scrappers will spend the time to disassemble alternators into their individual pieces. While you will get more money per pound for each of the individual pieces, it isn’t enough to justify the time and effort it takes to disassemble the alternator. Your best option when it comes to selling alternators or starters for cash to your local scrap metal recycling facility, is to bring them in whole. You will get paid a slightly lower price per pound, but the time you save from not taking them apart is worth it.

If you have any questions on how to best clean a particular item for scrapping so that it will be the best use of your time, and get the most money, just give us a call. We are always happy to answer any of your scrap metal recycling questions.
